Bay Park
The Examiners Instructions:
“Ok, What I would like you to do is the Bay Park exercise. If you would like to drive forward and to the right until your wheels are straight. Then I would like you to reverse back into one of the bays. Try not to hit the kerb”.
What you need to do:
- Clutch down into 1st, clutch to the biting point (no gas).
- Observations – look left & right before moving off. At the test centre watch out for other cars, motor bikes and their riders.
- If it’s safe, handbrake off, fraction up on the clutch and drive forward until your body is level with the end of the white lines. Start turning to the right. Just before the car becomes parallel with the bays, take all the steering off. Once the wheels are straight come to a stop and secure your car.
- Clutch down into reverse, clutch to the biting point (no gas).
- Observations – have a good look around including both blind spots.
- If it’s safe, handbrake off, fraction up on the clutch and creep back. Look over your right shoulder at the white line you are aiming for (your reference point). Once the green dot looks like it's touching the white line stop. This is your point of turn.
- Observations – as always at a point of turn you need a blind spot check. This time, over your left shoulder as this is where the front of the car will go once you start to steer – miss this and you will probably fail! Plus have a general good look around.
- If it’s safe, handbrake off, fraction up on the clutch and creep the car back, simultaneously steering full lock to the right.
- Once you have the steering on and you are waiting for the car to come round, you should be looking behind you, over your right shoulder.
- Once the car comes round and you start to get close to the bay, swap your observations to the left door mirror.
- In the mirror, as the car comes round, you should be able to see both the side of the car and the white line of the bay.
- Just before the car becomes parallel with the line, straighten up (slow speed, quick steering).
- Once you feel you are straight and in the bay have a quick look over your left shoulder (out of the back window).
- Look right, out of the back passenger window at the big green dot. When it looks like it's touching the kerb, stop and secure the car.
- Make sure you have a good look left & right when you are asked to drive on.
