Turn In The Road
The Examiners Instructions:
"What I would like you to do is to turn the car round to face the opposite direction using forward and reverse gears. Try not to hit the kerb as you go".
- Once it is safe, creep the car forward, simultaneously steering full lock to the right.
- Whilst you are waiting for the car to come round have another quick check over your right shoulder for any traffic.
- If you do encounter any other traffic at any time during the manoeuvre, try to get into the side of the road and stop. They then have the choice to pass you or wait for you to continue.
- When the green dot (the one in the very small window just to the left of the front window) looks like it's touching the kerb, stop.
- Handbrake on, into reverse.
- Fig 1.
- Have a good look around. If it's safe, handbrake off and creep the car back, steering full lock to the left and looking over your left shoulder as you go.
- It's important to keep the speed of the car very slow at this point to give you time to get all the steering on.
- Once you have reached full lock and are waiting for the car to creep round you should switch your observations to over your right shoulder.
- There isn't a good reference point to know when to stop as there are too many variables - width of the road, speed of the car, how quickly you get the steering on etc. Once you have practiced it enough you will be able to judge how far you can safely go back.
- Once you feel you have gone back as far as you can, stop, handbrake on, into first.
- Have another good look around, especially over your left shoulder. It may be that another car has had to wait for you, as you were initially blocking the road, but once you have reversed as far as you can their lane has become clear. They might decide not to wait any longer, so you must make sure it is safe to continue! Miss this observation and you will probably fail.
- If it is safe, creep the car forward, steering full lock to the right.
- If you have enough space, then continue round. As you become parallel, straighten up and drive on as normal.
- If you think you might hit the kerb, stop and reverse again. It doesn't matter if you make it a 5 point turn as long as you don't hit the kerb.
